According to AppleInsider iPhone OS 4.0 can very well support multitasking. iPhone OS 3.0 already can, but it is restricted by Apple to allow only certain Apps (SMS,email, iPod, phone). Currently there are two main issues that prevent multitasking from happening on the iPhone: battery life and security. The current security model is designed to close the app when the user presses the home button — this successfully eliminates spyware and viruses.
